DHIO Research and Engineering Pvt Ltd., a Bangalore based collaborative engineering R&D Company, in partnership with TESIS [Russia] and CAPVIDIA [Belgium] organised 3 days hands on workshop in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) at Hotel Basil, Malleswaram from 11-13th December 2014.

The workshop was inaugurated by well renowned CFD expert Dr. Sekhar Majumdar- Professor NMIT Bangalore and former head of CTFD & NAL. Dr.S.Majumdar briefed on how the CFD has evolved over these years and the recent developments of various CFD technique based tools and applications. Expressing his views on modern day CFD engineers he mentioned that, "Modern day engineers should understand the fact that CFD is not just coloured pictures but it is actual flow physics being replicated in a computational domain. Also it is necessary to correlate and validate the results through analytical, experimental and theoretical data, which facilitates in analysing the practical systems in virtual environment."

Proceeding the inaugural speech by Dr.S.Majumdar, Mr. Saravanakumar Kandasamy- team lead CFD at DHIO, introduced the new generation CFD code FlowVision-developed by TESIS Russia, to the participants. Mr. Saravanakumar mentioned that, “FlowVision is a CFD tool with unique capabilities and it is different from other commercial CFD codes available in the market. FlowVision helps engineers in drastically reducing the time required for completing complex geometry analysis through its unique algorithm for mesh generation. This makes the product development and evaluation stage much shorter compared to using other tools. Also its solver capability allows the user to model and analyse various types of flow and heat transfer problem in single software. A live demonstration showcasing the easiness of analysing complex phenomenon using FlowVision was performed through analysing problems from aerospace, automotive, power and general engineering sectors.

Every participant were offered with an opportunity to experience the capabilities of FlowVision through hands on training exercise during the workshop, with access to individual computer and FlowVision software. This enabled them to create simple model, analyse and appreciate the new technology. Various participants expressed their views on how impressed they were with the software including a participant from defence sector, whose views were- “I have never experienced such easiness while handling complex systems with the traditional approach. A model that could take 15 -30 days for completion using other commercial code was solved in just few hours using FlowVision. I am thrilled with the technology and interested in exploring more to use in our regular activities”

The other chief guest and speaker Dr. Saravanan S, Engineering Officer from CPRI Bangalore explained about challenges in particle combustion simulation and opportunities within power industries.

Followed by his speech, Dr.S.Ganesan-Scientist from GTRE delivered his speech on “Challenges and Opportunities in Gas Turbine CFD Simulation”. According to his views both academics & private companies having extensive experience in this domain should come forward and collaborate in research activities at various levels, to contribute effectively in projects of national interest. This can help such technologies being put to the use of giving better solutions to the societal needs”.

The other key speakers includes Dr.S.Venkat- Head CFD Group, NAL, briefed the participants about Multiphase flow modelling in aero engines and importance of correlating experimental results with simulation results. Dr. Wilson Lawrence-CFD expert from Ingersoll Rand Technical Centre explained the challenges involved in product development, innovation process and importance of modelling and simulation (CFD) in product development cycle. He shared his experience regarding techno commercial difficulties that a CFD engineer would face within industries and interacted with participants on many aspects of applying such technologies effectively within a commercial environment.

The 3-days CFD workshop concluded on 13th Dec 2014 with a valedictory session by Mr. Santhosh Lingappa, Director DHIO Research and Engineering Pvt Ltd., he expressed “New technologies like FlowVision can help engineers to accelerate the research activities and develop faster solutions with a shorter time; its optimisation capability augment engineers with the facility to evaluate different cost effective options to enhance a product with a shorter lead time. This kind of workshop is a platform for discussing further on innovative technologies and an eye opener for developing new ideas. DHIO is always happy to associate with Academicians, Researchers for collaborative engineering simulations.
